Sodium hexafluorophosphate Description
Appearance and Properties: The density is 2.369g/cm3. Appearance is colorless crystalline powder. Very soluble in water. Soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, high temperature decomposition.
Preparation of NaPF6:
PCl5 + NaCl + 6 HF → NaPF6 + 6 HCl
Step 1 – Reaction Setup
Introduce phosphorus pentafluoride gas into a reaction vessel containing sodium chloride and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride for full reaction. Maintain the temperature at 10°C to yield a sodium hexafluorophosphate solution.
Step 2 – Filtration and Solvent Removal
2. After the reaction is complete, start by filtering out any insoluble material. Then, remove the solvent to obtain the crude sodium hexafluorophosphate product.
Step 3 – Crystallization and Purification
3. Dissolve the crude sodium hexafluorophosphate product in a mild solvent. Concentrate the solution, and induce crystallization by adding a less soluble solvent. Finally, achieve pure sodium hexafluorophosphate through vacuum drying.
Please ensure that you follow appropriate safety measures when working with these chemicals, and utilize the necessary equipment and expertise for chemical reactions.
Storage:
Store in a ventilated, cool, dry, airtight place, away from fire, heat and oxidants. Rain and moisture proof.
