Silver nitrate Description

1. Physical properties

Colorless flaky crystals, easily soluble in water and ammonia, soluble in ether and glycerol, slightly soluble in absolute ethanol, almost insoluble in concentrated nitric acid. Its aqueous solution is slightly acidic. Because silver nitrate solution contains a large amount of silver ions, it is highly oxidizing and corrosive to a certain extent. It is used medically to corrode hyperplasia of granulation tissue, and the dilute solution is used as a bactericide for eye infections. It becomes a light yellow liquid after melting and remains white after solidification.

2. Chemical properties

Silver nitrate turns gray-black when exposed to organic matter and decomposes into silver.

It decomposes into silver, nitrogen, oxygen and nitrogen dioxide when heated to 440°C. Aqueous solutions and ethanol solutions have a neutral reaction to litmus, with a pH of approximately 6.

It can undergo precipitation or coordination reactions with a series of reagents.

3. Used as a bactericide and corrosive in medicine. In the daily chemical industry, it is used for dyeing hair, etc. Used in analytical chemistry for the determination of chlorine, bromine, iodine cyanide and thiocyanate.

4. The ammonia solution of silver nitrate can be reduced by organic reducing agents aldehyde and sugar, therefore it is a reagent for the determination of aldehydes and sugars. It is also used to measure chloride ions, determine manganese catalysts, electroplating, photography, and porcelain coloring.

5. In the electronics industry to manufacture conductive adhesives, new gas purifiers, A8x molecular sieves, silver-plated pressure equalizing suits and gloves for live work, etc. In the photosensitive industry to manufacture photosensitive materials such as movie film, X-ray photographic film and photographic film.
