The structure of germanium oxide:
The structure of GeO2 can be described using a crystalline structure. Its crystal structure belongs to the orthorhombic crystal system with a space group of Pbcn. In the crystal, germanium atoms and oxygen atoms are connected via covalent bonds. Each germanium atom is surrounded by four oxygen atoms, forming a tetrahedral structure. Each oxygen atom is shared by two germanium atoms, creating a chain-like structure. These chains intertwine in the crystal, connecting through shared terminal oxygen atoms. This structure confers high hardness and stability to GeO2.
Apart from its crystalline structure, GeO2 can also exist in an amorphous or glassy state. The amorphous form is created due to rapid cooling during the preparation process, resulting in a disordered structure. Compared to the crystalline state, amorphous germanium oxide has lower density and higher refractive index. Additionally, amorphous GeO2 exhibits certain optical properties, hence finding extensive application in the fabrication of optical devices.
Production Process: GeO2 is obtained by hydrolyzing and drying germanium tetrachloride
Use
1.Germanium oxide serves as a raw material for producing metallic germanium and other germanium compounds.
2.It acts as a catalyst in the production of poly(ethylene terephthalate), as well as in spectroscopic analysis and semiconductor materials.
3.It can manufacture fluorescent powder for optical glass.
4.GeO2 can function as a catalyst in petroleum refining processes involving conversion, desulfurization, gasoline fraction adjustment, as well as in the production of color films and polyester fibers.
